WMO’s ACTIVITIES ON WEATHER MODIFICATION —
COOPERATION WITH ITALY

Secretary-General
World Meteorological Organization
(Rome, Palazzo Giustiniani, 22 June 1999)

Italy, I am pleased to say, has an extensive national meteorological background and it is on the forefront of weather modification activities.

These activities, among others, include “Progetto Pioggia” the Italian Rain Enhancement Project which was a programme developed in response to the continuous drought experienced in the Mediterranean area and southern Italy, in particular.

It was initiated in 1985 to verify the possibility of using the Israeli techniques from the 1960s in other geographical areas.

It was implemented by TECNAGRO with international scientific advice.

In the first phase, from 1986 to 1987, a feasibility study was completed to verify the possibility of adapting the Israeli method to the particular conditions of the experimental area.

In the second phase, the actual experiment began.

The project was interrupted, for financial reasons, in 1995, but radar analyses and images of cloud modification (cloud tops and rain totals) that took place downwind in the target areas, afforded evidence at times of increased precipitation.

Considering the TECNAGRO experience, WMO has asked them to provide technical advice in the planning of a rain enhancement project in Saudi Arabia.
